The Office

The Office is a show which revolves around the daily lives of a small paper company in Scranton, Pennsylvania. It follows the story of employees in their day-to-day work life, which mainly consists of fighting egos and boredom. Michael Scott is the regional manager of Dunder Mifflin Paper Company. His character is based upon Steve Carrell’s real personality; a boss who is very caring, but with a slightly absent-minded attitude. He cares about each of his employees and his main goal in each episode is to achieve success for the company. He starts out as the typical obnoxious boss, but quickly becomes friends with his employees and learns that he needs them just as much as they need him.

What is the storyline of the show?

The sitcom follows the fictional lives of office employees in the Scranton branch of Dunder Mifflin, a mid-sized paper supply company. The office is split into two groups: sales and paper sales. The characters are Regional Manager Michael Scott, his second in command Dwight Schrute, shipping and receiving guy Jim Halpert, accountant Angela Martin, administrative assistant Pam Beesly, salesman Ryan Howard, salesman Andy Bernard, receptionist Kelly Kapoor, and temporary workers Oscar Martinez and Phyllis Vance. Each episode is loosely based on situations creator Greg Daniels experienced when he was working for a temp agency.

What made this show so popular?

The show was praised for its often cynical, often hilarious view of office life. “The Office” is one of few American shows to be described as a cult favorite. The show gained much popularity in the United States, receiving consistently high ratings and critical praise. It won an Emmy Award for outstanding comedy series in 2005, a Golden Globe Award for best comedy series in 2007, and was nominated for an additional five awards in 2008.

Who can watch this show?

The Office is intended for both a mature and wide audience. The show contains adult humor, which is found in practically all episodes. However, the writers have said that they specifically tailor the humor to what they believe to be appropriate for the characters. For example, most of Michael’s humor comes from trying to make himself look good at his job, while Dwight’s humor generally derives from playing pranks on others in the office.

What is the best thing about the office?

Each character brings a different quality to the office, creating a unique environment. Michael Scott is best known for making inappropriate jokes and not having a clue about how to treat his employees. Dwight Schrute has some very peculiar hobbies, which create a humorous dynamic with his co-workers. Pam Beesly is one of the only characters with any real romantic success in the office, which helps balance out the characters that have constant failures in their relationships with women.

How they manage their personal and office life?

They manage their personal and office lives by using various techniques. Both Michael and Dwight use humor to cope with the difficulties of their jobs. Angela Martin uses crying as a way to deal with her problems. Pam Beesly copes by dreaming of having a better job or boyfriend.
