Empire of Light is a movie that follows Hilary Small, an employee of “The Empire,” a cinema in a coastal English town with a history of mental illness and lithium dependency. The film follows Hilary as she struggles with the legacy that has been left behind by her former boss, Alexander Small (John Lithgow) and the life she has always wanted to live outside of her work. To avoid the social stigma of being known as a “widow woman,” Florence publicly feigns blindness and uses the pretense to infiltrate the private world of Francesco an aging and rather mysterious painter who is beginning to lose his sight. Hidden from view in his dark studio, the two begin a secret affair sparked by their mutual love of art. Over time, and as they search for a magical “Empire of Light” that exists somewhere within the human spirit, Florence’s desire to be a painter is reawakened.But their relationship is threatened by a tragic secret that could bring shame and dishonor to Florence and Francesco.
