Disneys Mulan

Mulan is an animated film made by Disney in 1998. It was released to theatres, and then later released on VHS (video), DVD (digital versatile disc) and Blu-ray. The movie has received many positive reviews from critics, as well as many awards including two Oscars for Best Original Music Score and Best Original Song “Reflection”. Mulan is about a young woman who disguises herself as a man to take her father’s place during the Chinese military draft which requires all eligible males to serve in the army. She joins the army with three other soldiers she met while travelling dressed as a male: Li Shang, a captain; Yao, her comedic sidekick and Mulan’s eventual love interest; and Chien-Po, the largest of the group.

Ratings:

On Rotten Tomatoes the film has a rating of 77% with an average rating of/= six out of eight, and it holds a score of 73% on Metacritic. Mulan is one Disney movie that critics seem to be interested in revisiting, so we will see if this changes.

A search on Rotten Tomatoes shows that there have been 56 reviews written about Mulan so far, and they are mostly positive. For example, Roger Ebert gave the film a three out of four-star review in 1998 while writing “The fact that Mulan was not available to watch online or stream when I first looked made me think that Disney may be using Mulan to build hype for its upcoming live-action remake of the film.” And he’s right — it turns out this is exactly what Disney plans to do with their new version: “Disney wants people who love these animated classics – but were too young to see the films in theatres – to be excited about seeing what’s still to come.”

Original Release Date:

The Mulan original was released on November 17th, 1998. This is the only version currently available on Netflix with a release date of November 12th, 2018. But Disney plans to put out its live-action remake on March 27th, 2020 and there’s no word yet as to whether it will also be made available through this streaming service.

In the meantime, people can rent Mulan on DVD from Netflix. It costs $45 and is available for a limited time only in Spanish or Portuguese with English subtitles. The 1998 version is also now available to stream through Amazon Prime Video at a cost of just $14.99 – it’s unclear if Disney will be bringing this version back later as well, or replacing it with its own live-action remake when it releases next year.”

Description: Disney released their Mulan film in 2018 while they’re working on their upcoming 2020 release that’s slated to come out March 27th; so there’s no word yet as to whether Mulan will also be made available through Netflix.

Mulan’s Storyline:

The story begins when Mulan, daughter of one of the Emperor’s generals is born. It was a time in China where all men were being conscripted; for battle against invading Huns. And it seems that her father will be called to duty too as he has no sons.

Mulan sets out on a journey to find an elderly war hero; who can take his place but she ends up saving him instead; by beating off some bandits with nothing more than fireworks! She then disguises herself as this soldier so that she could go into combat under her father’s name. When they reach the field frontlines though they are given new uniforms; which reveal their identity. And Mulan is asked to return home while everyone else fights on.”
