The first question most people have when watching this new series is: where do I even start? Believe it or not, like many other tv shows sherlock employs flashback scenes strategically throughout every single show from time to time. But these flashbacks are different, they all take place in sherlock’s mind.

We see sherlock envisioning and then solving cases from the past, which helps to explain why he is so good at what he does. But with each episode we see a different flashback case- it starts off with “The Six Thatchers” where Sherlock solves his first (and most iconic) case of Mary Morstan as Mrs John Watson, followed by flashbacks for The Lying Detective:

a woman who has been tortured into believing her husband was killed because she wouldn’t sell one of her paintings; The Woman: an elaborate game played out over two years between three people – a man, a woman and another person pretending to be transgender; and finally Holmes deduces that there are two people in love with each other, one of whom is married.

The Game-Changing Sherlock Season Five

“Sherlock season five,” the long-awaited continuation of this adored show, was released January 15th on BBC One and PBS Masterpiece. Watching it has been an emotional rollercoaster for fans who have waited so many years to find out what happened next after “The Reichenbach Fall.”

But before I get into spoilers: let’s recap some things about this newest season that are important to know first. First off, all episodes take place inside sherlock’s mind while he is recovering from a fake death; we see him envisioning and then solving cases from his past which helps explain how good he is.

Second, Watson is in sherlock’s mind too but she doesn’t know this until the season finale. Her role is to be sherlock’s moral compass: he can’t solve cases without her and his imagination starts going wild when they’re not together.

Third, “The Final Problem” solves the mystery of how Holmes survived that fall at Reichenbach Falls from Conan Doyle’s tale (spoiler alert!). Moriarty threatened Sherlock with a sniper rifle for seven years so he faked it all- meaning John was never really shot by a suicide bomber or died on an airplane- just like we knew! And finally, Mary Morstan dies giving birth to their child. This revelation has caused mixed feelings among fans because while it makes for an excellent twist, it also feels like Sherlock is losing yet another person he loves.

In addition to the show’s new season on January 15th, there are more sherlock mysteries and adventures coming our way!

The first three novels- The Sign of Four, A Scandal in Bohemia, The Hound of Baskerville – will be released as a newly illustrated e-book series this month by Penguin Books Ltd., which has partnered with Hartswood Films (the production company that produces Sherlock). The cast and crew of Sherlock Season Five have made some incredible revelations about what the upcoming season will bring, including more insight into Moriarty’s return. There had been speculation that Andrew Scott was returning for a flashback scene with Molly Hooper (Louise Brealey) but this has now been confirmed as false. The new series is also set to explore Mycroft Holmes’ backstory. He will be played by Toby Jones in his second appearance on the show after ‘The Reichenbach Fall’.
