This is Goro Miyazaki’s first full-time film of Studio Ghibli, telling the story of a teenage orphan who was adopted by a witch. Here is what this new project we already know.
The first CGI film
We know the love for cartoons of Hayao Miyazaki, and the man already expressed his reticence on the permanence of 3D animation. But new principles are emerging with a new generation: the new movie from Studio Ghibli is being made first fully in the CGI (Computer-generated Imaging, or digital special effects), a technique already in use for the Ronia series, The Robber’s Daughter, by its son Goro Miyazaki (Tales from Earthsea, From Up on Poppy Hill). It’s a leap forward and a dangerous undertaking for the famous Japanese studio, which is renowned for its great poetry. A new adaptation
The creators of Studio Ghibli drew on the fiction of the British writer Diana Wynne Jones for the second time to envision their new plot. As early as 2004 Howl’s Moving Castle was inspired by Howl’s Moving Castle 1, a 1986 fantasy novel. This time, Goro Miyazaki is talking about Earwig and The Witch, a 2011 novel that tells the story of a young girl who took on a witch called Bella Yaga, and gradually discovers her new environment’s magic properties.
Release Date of Aya and the Witch
Aya to Majo or Aya and the Witch are to be broadcast on the Japanese NHK television network in the winter of 2020 according to the American magazine Entertainment Weekly. The film was chosen to appear in France in the 2020 edition of the Cannes Film Festival. It is expected to appear in France as well.
